Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey has pipped buddy Tom Cruise to the title of the most powerful celebrity in the world.

The annual Forbes magazine list of the 100 most influential stars acknowledged Oprah's earnings of a whopping $260m (£132m), followed by Tiger Woods (£50.6m) in second place and Madonna (£36.4m) in third.

Actor Brad Pitt (£17.7m) came in 5th place, beating partner Angelina Jolie who sits at 14th. Johnny Depp came in at sixth place with earnings estimated at $92m (£46.5m).

Rounding out the Top 10 was Tom Cruise with an estimated $31m (£15.6m), rapper Jay-Z with an estimated $83m (£42.9m) and director Steven Spielberg with $110m (£55.6m)

The Rolling Stones and Elton John were the only Brits to make it into the Top 10, but the list also included Simon Cowell (21st) and Kate Moss (74th).

The list calculates earnings and media presence to establish a celebrity's power.
