New heart-throb is born at Twilight premiere
Updated on 04 December 2008
Thousands of screaming teenage girls braved the freezing cold for the premiere of vampire love story Twilight.
The British star of the film Robert Pattinson, 22, and American Kristen Stewart, 18, walked down a black carpet blasted with dry ice in London's Leicester Square.
The film is based on the first novel in Stephanie Meyer's series about high school girl Bella Swann who falls in love with vampire Edward.
Stewart admitted the filmmakers had not been expecting such a warm reception at the London premiere.
She said: "Yeah it is much bigger than the one that we had in LA, it's cool because our studio was like 'don't expect anything, it's not going to be so big over there.' Apparently we were all very wrong."
The film was shot for $37 million (£25 million) and has already more than doubled that amount in its opening weekend.
Heart-throb Pattinson said: "I made a bet as a joke with my manager to say how much it would make opening weekend and it made that much. It's like it'll make $80 million and it was like $5 million off. No one was expecting - it beat Bond opening weekend - it's completely nuts."
He also confirmed a sequel is on the way, and said: "Yeah there is a sequel it was confirmed three days ago, they're shooting in March in Canada and Italy."
Twilight opens in UK cinemas on 19 December.
