Radiohead tell fans 'it's up to you'

Updated on 02 October 2007

By Krishnan Guru-Murthy

Radiohead tell fans they can pay whatever they want to download the band's new album.

How much would you pay for an album by one of the world's biggest rock bands? Radiohead have become the latest group to bypass music stores and record labels to distribute their music.

The band is asking fans to put their own price on their new album 'In Rainbows', which can be downloaded for free except for a 45p transaction charge.

The band, whose best-selling albums include OK Computer, announced their seventh album, In Rainbows, on their website. They said of the price "it's up to you" - and then added: "No really, it's up to you."

Fans can either pay £40 for a deluxe box set on CD or pay a price of their own choosing for the download. They will then release it on CD early next year.

Music Giveaway

In recent months both Prince and Travis have given away albums free with a Sunday newspaper. And The Charlatans are also giving away their next album through a radio station's website.

We will be joined by Pete Paphides - Chief Rock Critic for the Times to discuss the issue
