Updated on 13 August 2009
Les Paul, whose pioneering instruments were played by some of music's biggest axemen from Johnny Marr to Pete Townshend, has died aged 94.

His name was synonymous with the electric guitar.
A passionate inventor, he created one of the first solid body electric guitars in 1941 and played a key role in the birth of rock and roll a decade later as a designer for Gibson guitars in the 1950's.
