Brendel bows out

Jon Snow reports on Alfred Brendel's last professional performance to rapturous applause, and a 20-minute standing ovation last night.

The great classical pianist Alfred Brendel, regarded as one of the greatest living musicians in Britain, gave his farewell concert in Vienna, saying after a career spanning 60 years that he wanted to stop while he was "still in pretty good shape".

The editor of the Guardian newspaper, Alan Rusbridger, an amateur musician himself, was also at last night's concert in Vienna. He joins Jon Snow.
