The United States government is urging the Kremlin to carry out "an immediate and thorough investigation" into the murder of campaigning journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was shot dead in her Moscow flat.
The State Department said the intimidation and killing of journalists in Russia was an affront to democracy and media freedom. It described Ms Politkovskaya as "personally courageous and committed to seeking justice, even in the face of previous death threats".
Ms Politkovskaya was a strong critic of President Putin's war in Chechnya. Channel 4 News has learned that she was due to testify there in a high-profile kidnapping case.
