A stark warning from Channel 4 as executives called for public funding as they unveiled Next on Four, an ambitious blueprint for the future.
Dramas, comedies and hard hitting documentaries could all vanish from Channel 4's schedules without a new way of securing public funds, they said.
The channel promises more documentaries, new digital projects and a £50m fund to develop a whole new generation of talent.
But Chairman Luke Johnson said if the nation wanted "brilliant, original output" there would be a cost.
