Council-run weeklies are the latest threat to the UK's beleaguered regional papers.

Already facing a crisis in advertising, and losing readers to the internet, executives from the country's local newspapers are attending a summit with government to demand action over what they claim is a new threat - council run papers.

The industry claims some local authorities are aggressively competing with existing paid-for titles - and putting their future at risk.

But the councils say their publications provide valuable information about services.
