McCartney plays secret New York gig
Updated on 15 June 2007
Sir Paul McCartney played a surprise gig for a few hundred fans in New York to celebrate the success of his new album.
The ex-Beatle staged the concert on Wednesday night to mark his latest release Memory Almost Full reaching number three in the US charts - his highest position for over a decade.
News of the free event sent McCartney's fans into a frenzy with hundreds queuing outside the city's Highline Ballroom hoping to snap up a pass.
The lucky few were treated to a 20 strong set including tracks from the new album and a dozen Beatles classics, such as I Saw Her Standing There.
Other Fab Four favourites included set-opener Drive My Car, and anthems Hey Jude and Let It Be.
Sir Paul went on to dedicate Tug Of War a track from his 1982 album Here Today to his late wife Linda and his late former bandmates John Lennon and George Harrison - telling the audience that he originally wrote the ballad for Lennon after his murder in 1980.
Memory Almost Full is Macca's first release on Hear Music - the new label created by coffee chain Starbucks.
