McAdams choice is elementary
Updated on 01 October 2008
Rachel McAdams has joined the cast of Guy Richie's new film, Sherlock Holmes.
She'll star alongside Robert Downey Jr, who plays Holmes, and Jude Law - his sidekick Dr John Watson - as Irene Adler, the British sleuth's love interest.
Adler was a character in the Sherlock Holmes book A Scandal in Bohemia, written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1891.
McAdams' former movie credits include The Notebook and The Wedding Crashers.
The film is due to begin shooting next month.
Sir Arthur wrote four novels and 56 short stories that featured Holmes. All but four are narrated by Dr Watson with two narrated by Holmes himself, and two others penned in the third person.
The writer always maintained that Holmes was inspired by Dr Joseph Bell, for whom he had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
