Marley family to sue Universal
Updated on 31 August 2007
The Marleys are suing Universal Music Group and Verizon Wireless for using the reggae star's name and likeness without their permission.
A statement from Fifty Six Hope Road Music Ltd, which is owned by Marley's family, explains that Universal had agreed to give US mobile phone provider Verizon the right to use Marley's name, likeness and image to promote a new set of ringtones.
They said: "The agreement was entered into without the permission of the Marley family."
But Universal called the claims "meritless" and said they have not received any suit from the Marley estate.
"Specifically, we are offering Bob Marley ringtones through Verizon in accordance with the terms of a long-standing contract between Bob Marley and UMG," Universal Music Group said.
The group owns Island Records, the label which Marley released hits such as One Love and I Shot The Sheriff.
