Mamma Mia: Biggest-selling DVD ever

Hit Abba musical Mamma Mia! has become the biggest-selling DVD ever this Christmas, online retail giant Amazon has said.

The film - based on the songs of the Swedish supergroup - has sold "several hundred thousand" copies on Amazon alone since its release at the end of November, UK managing director Brian McBride said.

Mamma Mia! sold almost four times as many copies as last year's Christmas best-seller, The Bourne Ultimatum, with more than 200,000 pre-ordered on Amazon before its release.

The demand for the feel-good movie - starring Meryl Streep and Julie Walters - came amid tighter times ahead for UK households as the economy turns sour, Mr McBride said.

"People are buying stuff that they can do at home, I think people are expecting to go out a little less... It is about escapism."

Sales of the film beat Harry Potter author JK Rowling's Tales of Beedle the Bard book into second place by "a clear margin" in the overall best-sellers list, Amazon said.
