Leona Lewis has become the first British female solo artist to go straight to the top of the US album chart.

According to Billboard magazine, Spirit sold 205,000 copies in its first week of release.

It seals the 23-year-old's success, following the release of single Bleeding Love which also went to number one.

The last British female to top the US album chart was Sade in 1986 with Promise.

Lewis won X Factor in 2006, securing a contract with Judge Simon Cowell's Syco Records, which partnered on the project with New York-based J Records.

Spirit debuted at number one on its release in November, while Bleeding Love was the UK's biggest-selling single last year.
