Klaxons scoop Mercury Prize

The Klaxons have scooped this year's Mercury Prize for their debut album Myths Of The Near Future.

The three-piece dance band from London beat 11 other contenders - including Amy Winehouse and bookies favourite Bat for Lashes - to take the £20,000 prize.

The judges said of the album "rock meets pop meets dance - the Klaxons take us on an ecstatic musical adventure".

Unfortunately for them, their win was overshadowed by the return of Winehouse, who attended the ceremony and performed a moving rendition of her song Love Is A Losing Game.

But Klaxons lead singer Jamie Reynolds said he was "not surprised" that Winehouse did not win.

He said: "When I came off stage I was upset because I thought she gave a fantastic performance and I absolutely loved her record, but her recording is retro and ours is a forward-thinking record and that's what the Mercury Prize stands for."

Last year, the prize was won by the Arctic Monkeys.

The prize has been going since 1992 and leads to an increase in sales for the winning band.
