Julianne Moore will appear as the princess from The Little Mermaid in a new image released by Disney.

The Hollywood actress has posed as Ariel, complete with her mermaid's tail, in an undersea world amid wavy coral as US Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps swims past.

The image is the latest in a series of portraits by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz for Disney's Year Of A Million Dreams celebration.

Moore said Ariel was her five-year-old daughter Liv's "favourite princess" so she "leapt at the chance" to get involved.

Moore added: "All the images I've seen that Annie's shot so far - Cinderella and Alice and the prince one - are absolutely exquisite."

Leibovitz said: "There's a moment in the shoot where Julianne is sitting on a rock in her mermaid tail and her young daughter comes in, and there is not a dry eye in the house."

Since January last year, Leibovitz has captured a host of stars playing out their Disney fantasies, including David Beckham, Scarlett Johansson, Beyonce, and Jessica Biel.
