Iconic Saint Laurent dies
Updated on 02 June 2008
Known as the founder of modern fashion, the iconic designer Yves Saint Laurent has died in Paris at the age of 71.
Born in Algeria, Yves Saint Laurent started out making clothes for his mother. But he would go on to "liberate" women with his revolutionary tuxedo trouser suit, known as Le Smoking.
Openly gay, Saint Laurent suffered from a career-threatening nervous disposition, and he became increasingly reclusive after his retirement in 2002.
But tonight he is being remembered as a designer who democratised fashion.
