Hollywood stars rally round Obama

Hollywood stars like Ben Affleck, George Clooney and Spike Lee have come out to support Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention.

Throughout the week, more than 300 events are being held in Colorado with some of Hollywood's biggest names hosting them.

However, Mr Obama's celebrity status has been criticised by the Republicans who have compared him to the likes of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

A US pop culture expert said: "If I were Barack Obama right now I would be hoping against hope that the celebrities would just keep quiet about me."

Some actors have also been quick to 'distance' themselves from their overwhelming support for Mr Obama out of fear of being counter-productive.

Oscar-winner Clooney said: "I have never texted or emailed Senator Obama. And I'll offer a million dollars to anyone who could prove otherwise.

He added: "In fact, I've only talked to the Senator once in the last year and a half on the phone."
