Actor Josh Hartnett says he wants to do arts-based charity work with children in Africa.

The American, who is currently starring in the West End production Rain Man, made the comments at a charity carnival in east London.

The charity Dramatic Need sends volunteers to Africa offering art, film, dance and photography activities for impoverished children.

They have worked with 4,500 children in 2008, and require £25,000 a year to keep going.

Hartnett said: "I want to go down there and actually help out. It's fun for an actor to be able to do something that's not for publicity, but actually go down and do something hands-on.

"It allows the kids to be children. It allows them to be creative and have a good time for a little portion of their day which I think is necessary."

Supermodel Helena Christensen also attended the event.

Christensen said: "I think it's a very worthy cause. I followed it from the beginning. I think it's a beautiful thought and a beautiful thing to do for children in Africa."
