Actor Colin Firth has announced his support for an Oxfam campaign to fight starvation in East Africa.

The charity is appealing for funds to expand the emergency response in Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea and northern Kenya, as soaring food prices have left millions hungry and on the edge of destitution.

Mamma Mia star Firth, along actors John Hannah and Daniela Nardini, author Iain Banks and musician Sandi Thom, have all backed the drive.

The Pride and Prejudice star said: "I travelled out with Oxfam to Ethiopia in 2005 and was inspired by the beauty of the country and its people.

"It's devastating to hear that throughout Ethiopia, Somalia and northern Kenya these people are facing another food crisis. A dangerous storm of factors - drought, conflict, grinding poverty and skyrocketing food prices - have stacked on top of each other and are pushing people over the edge.

"Malnutrition rates have spiked and children grow ever hungrier each day. Oxfam desperately needs the support of the British public to help avert catastrophe and keep people alive."

Hannah and Nardini have also visited the region to see Oxfam's work.

Banks, author of The Wasp Factory, said: "In a time of economic hardship for all, the poor tend to suffer disproportionately.

"We might worry about not getting a holiday in the sun or having to give up the Sky box and so think times are tough; some people have to worry about losing their baby or their own life to malnutrition or an easily preventable disease. So, please give generously if you can, but do just give."
