The nominations are out, but with Hollywood writers still striking, will the actors stay away from the ceremony?

A strike by the Writers' Guild of America disrupted the Golden Globes - and a similar scenario at the Oscars would prove disastrous for the film and television industries.

The writers strike, on since 5th November, shows few signs of resolution. This morning's nominations, announced traditionally at the crack of dawn in Beverly Hills, ended neutrally with this from the Academy President: "So please join us, if you can."

The path to Oscar glory

The British film Atonement has received seven Oscar nominations, including best picture and best supporting actress. Its two leads, James McAvoy and Keira Knightley and director Joe Wright have however been overlooked,

But the Coen brothers' No Country For Old Men and historical epic There Will Be Blood lead the field with eight Academy Award nominations each.
