Skin deep - the fight for acceptance

Updated on 04 July 2009

By Krishnan Guru-Murthy

A new film describes the true story of a white Afrikaaner couple who gave birth to a child with dark skin and frizzy hair, unaware they had black ancestry. Krishnan Guru-Murthy reports.

Sandra Laing with her mother

The couple lovingly brought her up as their "white" daughter.

But at the age of 10, Sandra Laing was classified as "black" and driven out of white society.

A new film, Skin, tells the extraordinary story of this woman, whose struggle with her identity has become a symbol for all the cruelty and devisiveness of apartheid South Africa.
