Slumdog Millionaire tops off a remarkable awards season by winning eight Oscars. Kate Winslet also wins the award for best actress in The Reader rounding off a strong night for British film.

Andy Duncan interview

Channel 4's off-shoot Film4 is a major player in the domestic movie industry - and played a large part in getting Slumdog Millionaire to the big screen. Its role in this project shows how it gets British films made.

Film4 paid for the option of making a film version of the novel on which it's based, Q &A.

It hired a screenwriter to adapt the book, hired Danny Boyle to direct, and found co-financing for the project.

Film4 also invested £1.05m. The total production cost about £15m, cheap by today's standards. It seems Film4's work paid off as 'Slumdog' has made nearly £160m worldwide at the box office.

Joining Carl Dinnen from our Central London studio is the chief executive of Channel 4 Andy Duncan to discuss the issue.
