Reality shows encourage audience involvement and make a lot of money from the telephone votes that decide the programme's twists and turns.
But what happens if those involved in the show do not like the script the public is writing for them?
It is a dilemma that has been brewing for weeks on the BBC's celebrity dance programme, as former political correspondent Sergeant, consistently received low marks for his performances, yet was kept in the competition by avid viewers.
