French film scoops Palme d'Or

Robert De Niro hands over the much coveted Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival to the French film The Class.

The Class was the last film to play in the competition and featured a number of amateur actors. The director is Laurent Cantet.

The Class is based on an autobiographical novel by a young French teacher who plays himself in the film.

There had been plenty of strong films in contention hoping for glory.
