Reaction to the London stage version of Brief Encounter has been so glowing, Broadway has come knocking to transfer it to New York.

Turning one of Britain's best loved films into a play was always going to be a gamble.

But the plan to put Brief Encounter on the stage attracted the help of an unlikely patron - the boss of the UK's second largest cinema chain.

The head of Cineworld donated one of his flagship cinemas ripped out the screen and built a stage for the play.
