The Bobby Sands biopic 'Hunger' gets a standing ovation in Cannes.

It has been described variously as "a sensational debut", "fearless and uncompromising" and "excellent but will provoke outrage".

The film by artist turned director Steve McQueen returns to the dark days of the Troubles when Sands led IRA prisoners in a hunger strike to demand prisoner of war status from Margaret Thatcher.

The sympathetic portrayal of Sands, played by Michael Fassbinder, and his republican cause is proving controversial however.
