61st Cannes film festival opens

Amidst the beachside glamour there'll be a good mix of high- and low-brow offerings.

The glitz and glamour of this year's Cannes Film Festival was getting into full swing today.

Jack Black, joined by nearly 40 huge "pandas", helped to kick off the festival as did, with perhaps less hilarity, hard-hitting Brazilian film "Blindness".

Today marks the start of 12 hectic days of movies, publicity and late-night revelry in Riviera resort.
