The former CHiPS star, Erik Estrada, has been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Estrada is best known for his role as Francis "Ponch" Poncherello in the US television series Chips, which followed the lives of highway patrolmen in Los Angeles.

The 58-year-old speaking at the ceremony dedicated his star to real life police officers: "Today for me is truly about those who reach out and help others on a daily basis. All of you men and women in law enforcement do that everyday for us."

Since CHiPS ended in 1983 Estrada has dipped his toe into the murky world of reality TV, featuring in VH1's The Surreal Life.

Of Puerto Rican descent, Estrada saw his award as an honour to his heritage: "For me as a Latin American actor to receive this honour I feel very proud. To me as an Hispanic American I feel twenty times as proud."
