The 50-year-old singer was rushed to the UCLA medical centre after paramedics were called to his Bel Air home on Thursday at around midday local time.

The TMZ website reported that UCLA staff had tried to resuscitate Jackson on arrival at the hospital, but that he was "completely unresponsive".

The singer, dubbed the king of pop, is one of the biggest selling artists in the history of popular music. He was due to begin a series of concerts at London's O2 Arena on 13 July.

After world renowned success in family band, the Jackson Five, Jackson sold more than 11 million singles in the UK as a solo artist. He also holds the record for the most Top 40 hits in the UK singles chart in one year, registering 19 in 2006.

Brian Oxman, Jackson's lawyer and family spokesman told Krishnan Guru-Murthy that the singer had been on medication for a long time for health reasons but that he and the family "have been very frightened of him abusing those medications."
