Murder most foul - with plenty of blood and gore - all the ingredients of a crime best seller. But do women authors really write more violent novels than men?
That's what top crime writer Ian Rankin claimed, sparking an angry response from fellow wordsmith Val McDermid.
Today she insisted the pair weren't embroiled in a vendetta. But what's the real story?
