Sun sets on Ballard's empire

Updated on 20 April 2009

By Nicholas Glass

Authors, filmmakers and musicians pay tribute to the writer J.G Ballard who died yesterday at the age of 78.

His novels and short stories influenced generations of writers with an often dark and dystopian vision of the future.

He was perhaps most famous for Empire of the Sun, about his boyhood in a Japanese internment camp in Shanghai, which became a hit Hollywood film.

Ballard said everything he had ever written had been shaped by the experience.

Interview: Martin Amis

Author Martin Amis talks about Ballard's life and literature with Jon Snow.
