Author George Macdonald Fraser, creator of the cult Flashman novels, has died at the age of 82.

By his own admission, the author George Macdonald Fraser said he created something of "a monster" in his series of Flashman novels, about a Victorian soldier who womanised his way through history.

Yet the British writer, who has died at the age of 82, created a gallivanting hero who became a cult figure.

Flashman first appeared in the literary classic Tom Brown's Schooldays, but his life story was taken up by Fraser, and he starred in 12 novels spanning 35 years.
