Titians for sale at 'bargain' £100m, can the government afford it?
Updated on 28 August 2008
Two Titian paintings are for sale and some say losing them "would be like the Mona Lisa being taking out of the Louvre" in Paris.
The director of the National Galleries of Scotland is desperate to raise £50m to buy the Titian painting, Diana and Actaeon and the same amount for the Italian Renaissance artist's Diana and Callisto.
The paintings, which are on public display in Edinburgh, are being offered for sale at well below their market value by the Duke of Sutherland.
He says he wants the paintings to be bought for the nation.
The unprecented partnership of the Scottish galleries, and the National Gallery in London have until the end of the year to try and secure the money. Will they be able to get the government to contribute to it?
