The art of war
Updated on 01 June 2007
Ninety years after Owen and Sasson, we have a special report on today's soldiers' response to the war in Iraq.
An exhibition of paintings opens today in the National Army Museum - the work of artist Matthew Cook, a soldier in the British Army who has served in Iraq.
It's an example of a growing phenomenon - painting, writing, animation and online journalism from British and American soldiers, serving in the front line of a war which is dominating the experiences of a military generation.
As Nina Teggarty reports, this flowering of art awakes echoes from an earlier era - the poetry of the first and second World wars. And it poses a similar set of challenges to military commanders.
