Public asked to walk the plinth

Updated on 23 June 2008

By Nicholas Glass

Anthony Gormley, chosen to provide the art for the fourth Trafalgar Square plinth, wants the public to stand on it.

It is certainly public art. The fourth plinth in London's Trafalgar Square will soon be adorned with 2,400 people standing on it - one at a time, of course.

The sculptor Anthony Gormley, best known for his Angel of the North, has been named as the latest artist to have his work chosen for the plinth.

But instead of creating a new piece of work, he is getting members of the public to stand on the plinth around the clock for an hour at a time.
