A Roman sarcophagus has been found on the edge of London's Trafalgar Square.

St Martin's, Trafalgar Square

Watch the report

It began as a project to prepare the historic church of St Martin in the Fields for the future. But it's ended up unearthing exciting discoveries about the past.

The excavation of the 19th century vaults of the church, on the edge of London's Trafalgar Square, uncovered a Roman limestone sarcophagus with a human skeleton inside.

It's thought the site may once have housed a Roman villa, which could mean that Roman London extended well beyond the city walls.
