Ebbsfleet designs unveiled
Updated on 07 May 2008
Turner Prize artists are amongst the shortlisted designs for the Ebbsfleet Landmark - aka Angel of the South.
Designs for a public sculpture, roughly the height of Nelson's Column, were unveiled this morning.
At 50 metres, the Ebbsfleet Landmark will measure twice the size of the Angel of the North - Antony Gormley's sculpture which looms above the A1 at Gateshead.
The Angel of the South, as it's being touted, will stand above the A2 in north Kent, where it will be visible from road, rail and air.
It will mark the Ebbsfleet International station and the planned transformation of Ebbsfleet Valley - and be one of the first things new arrivals from Europe will see as they enter the country via the Eurostar.
The shortlisted artists have developed proposals over the last three months. The finished work is expected to be completed by 2010.
Mark Wallinger, who won last year's Turner prize with reproduction of Brian Haw's protest against the Iraq war, is one of five artists who were asked to come up with a proposal for the £2m commission. His design is pictured above.
