If the celebrated photographer had failed to meet a deadline to repay a £14.7m loan, she faced the prospect of losing copyright over her life's work.

If the loan to Art Capital Group (ACG) was not repaid, Leibovitz could also lose properties she owns in New York.

The legal action brought by ACG against Ms Leibovitz alleges breach of contract.

According to documents filed at the New York State Supreme Court, ACG claims Ms Leibovitz, 59, allegedly agreed that her intellectual property and other assets might need to be sold as part of a restructuring plan.

Ms Leibovitz, who has taken pictures of iconic figures such as US President Obama’s wife, Michelle, has said she is concentrating on her photography.
