It's a watershed moment for one of the brightest stars of the Britart brigade. But will Hirst's gamble pay off?

Damien Hirst - whose probably made more money from his art than any other living artist - is about to take the gamble of his artistic career.

He's bypassed his usual galleries and sent all his latest work straight to Sotheby's.

The artist seems both excited and anxious as he gave us a personal tour of the sale.

He's added, as you'd expect, to his menagerie of pickled animals. And some are now gold tipped, blinged up if you prefer.

But Damien Hirst seems unusually nervous - not quite the self assured Damien Hirst we know and love.

He knows he's risking public failure in a way that he's never done before.

It all suggests a certain anxiety - promoting the sale as a last chance to buy certain things.

This seems to be a watershed moment for the brightest of the Britart stars.

Sotheby's is banking on new buyers - from Russia, the Middle East and India - and hoping that the art bubble won't burst.
