The 23-year-old singer picked up trophies for best British female and best album for the chart-topping ’21’.

Blur, who performed at the event, were awarded the outstanding contribution prize, after last winning a Brit in 1995 when they swept the board with four gongs.

But hopes that Adele would be awarded best British single failed to materialise after the award was given to One Direction for What Makes You Beautiful.

The award for best British male solo artist was given to Ed Sheeran, who also picked up the award for British breakthrough act with his album, +, while Coldplay won the award for best British group.

Adele also managed to steal the show by showing the finger after she was cut off during her acceptance speech by show bosses, after a rambling speech by Blur frontman, Damon Albarn, knocked the event off schedule.

Backstage, she apologised, saying: “I flipped the finger but it wasn’t to my fans. I’m sorry if I offended anyone but it was the suits that offended me. Than you all very much and thanks to my fans. I don’t want them to think I was swearing at them.”

She added that she was “over the moon” at her success at the awards. “I’m going to celebrate, oh yeah, but I can’t drink. I’m not allowed,” she added.
