Guantanamo torture
An exclusive interview with Moazzam Begg

Published: 24-Feb-2005

Channel 4 News has an exclusive interview with Moazzam Begg who says he was tortured, threatened and assaulted at Guantanamo Bay.

Mr Begg, who holds British and Pakistani nationality says he was treated more harshly before he arrived at Guantanamo Bay than during his time at the American camp.

The Americans had previously denied allegations involving the torture of prisoners.

It is his first account of life inside Guantanamo, and says he's never taken up arms against Britain or America.

He was released last month after three years in US custody without any legal representation and little contact with the outside world and says he came close to losing his faith.

He said he himself was not tortured but saw widespread use of violence and intimidation at the camp.

Born and raised in Birmingham, the 36-year-old said despite his two British passports, he is as British as anybody.

He admits twice spending time at training camps in Afghanistan - once in 1993 when he says he crossed the border for two weeks during a holiday in Pakistan and again in 1998, when he visited a camp run by the Kurds. But he says he's never taken up arms.

It all started in 2001 when he says he moved with his family to Afghanistan to help with community projects, but then went to Pakistan when the war started. It was while in Islamabad he says he was arrested in the middle of the night.

He says he was held at Bagram airbase where he claims he was tortured by his American captors.

His British lawyer wrote to the Foreign Office asking where he was being held, but was unable to glean any information. But Mr Begg says a British man and woman, who he believes were intelligence officers, were present during his second interview in captivity.

Moazzam Begg says he is considering suing both the American and British governments but he says for now his main goal is recovery.

“I do not think I can ever be back to normal. What is keeping me going is my faith and my family,” Mr Begg said.
