After the Tsunami Poll
Disaster

The Asian tsunami disaster should make us stop and think about how government spends our money in the rest of the world. But are they making the right choices?

A YouGov poll, commissioned by Channel 4, asked around two thousand people what they thought of the British Goverments strategy to overseas aid.

The results showed that:

  • 65 % believe British government is spending about the right amount to help the victims of the tsunami.

  • Most of these people (26%) believe the Government gave about 3% of the national income to overseas aid.

  • In fact, the government spends about 0.34% of national income on overseas aid. Knowing this, the percentage of people who thought the government was spending about the right amount on fell to 37%, while now 36% thought it was doing too little.

  • When told that the British government spends roughly eight times as much on defence as it does on overseas aid, 33% agreed that it’s important for Britain to keep its defence strong, but that it should also spend more on overseas aid. While 27% thought the government was getting the balance right between the two issues.

  • However the vast majority, 72% of people asked, disagreed that the taxes should be increased to fund an increase in overseas aid.

  • George Bush didn’t fare too well as 53% though the attitude of the US government under his watch was one of the biggest obstacles to tackling world poverty.

  • But virtually the same amount (54%) admitted that the tsunami has not made them more interested in helping poorer parts of the world over a long term period.
