Tsunami Online
Disaster

Published: 03-Jan-2005
By: Ziad Al-Hasso

The Internet has played a big part in helping bring aid, news and relief to people around the world touched by the tsunami disaster.

Donations

The global response to the disaster has been overwhelming and millions of pounds have been pledged from people of all nationalities. Many of these have donated via websites.

The Disasters Emergency Committee has also said that it would prefer people to donate online than through other means. Cash donated via the website can be processed faster and ultimately put to good use sooner.

Of the £60 million raised so far, at least £27 million has been sent in through their website.

Click here to donate online at http://www.dec.org.uk or call 0870 60 60 900

Other websites have also been playing their part in raising cash for the appeal:

Google have included a prominent link on their usually empty home page directing people to aid agencies and other organisations involved in the relief effort:

http://www.google.com/tsunami_relief.html

Amazon too have placed a large link to allow people to donate to the British Red Cross on their site:

Finding friends and family

Thousands of people have also been searching websites for any information they can find about missing friends and families. In response many message boards have been setup to help people find each other.

The International Red Cross run a service that aims to help people find missing people. It has a special section devoted to each of the countries affected by the tsunami disaster.

Click here to visit the ICRC websites (please note this site is very busy and may be slow to respond):
