THE TRANSLATOR'S STORY

"The Iraqi translator (who also died) had travelled up with the Black Watch from Basra. He had volunteered, but in so doing he delayed his wedding, which should have taken place yesterday - the very day he died".

"His name is not being released - a measure of the conditions which prevail here in Iraq that they believe it's in the best interests of his family in Basra not to identify him."

Dead soldier's family excoriates Bush
Iraq

Published: 05-Nov-2004
By: Sue Turton

'Killed for money and oil'.

The words of the brother of one of the three Black Watch soldiers killed in yesterday's suicide bomb in Iraq.

This morning they were named: thirty one year old Sergeant Stuart Gray, nineteen year old Private Paul Lowe and twenty two year old Private Scott McArdle.

All from Fife in Scotland, all killed along with their Iraqi interpreter on the second day of their controversial deployment to support US troops south of Baghdad.

At Camp Dogwood there was a sombre but determined mood as soldiers refused to be deterred from the mission at hand – that, they said, would dishonour those who had died.

"For a close knit family such as the Black Watch this is indeed a painful blow and all three of these soldiers were our friends. But as we mourn their deaths, so we remember their lives and give thanks for their contribution to the life of our regiment."

Lieutenant Colonel JAMES COWAN, Black Watch

Paul Lowe's mum had told him to look after his younger brother Craig, serving in the same regiment.

Stuart Gray was married. His commanding officer described him as a sergeant of great experience in the mortar platoon.

Scott McArdle was a rifleman in the elite reconnaissance platoon.

Their translator, who also died, had been with the Black Watch since their arrival in Iraq.

One army source reportedly said they were lucky the death toll hadn't been higher, describing the scene as carnage.

After moving north last week, the troops had set up a base at Camp Dogwood.

Their mission - to cut off insurgents getting supplies into Fallujah.

They had come under repeated rocket attacks since their arrival from the east side of the River Euphrates, controlled by the US.

So, on Wednesday the British area of operation was extended to the east bank to try to silence these attacks.

It proved a fatal decision : in the early hours two armoured vehicles were hit by roadside bombs and mortar fire 6 miles north east of Dogwood.

They radioed for help.

Then, at around 1pm another Warrior armoured vehicle broke down in this hostile territory.

A roadblock was set up to protect the crew as they attempted to get the vehicle moving, a standard procedure but one the insurgents had seemingly predicted.

A car drove up to the soldiers manning the checkpoint and the driver detonated an explosive inside.

Tony Blair stood alongside the Iraqi interim Prime Minister this morning to deliver his sympathies.

"First of all I'd like to express my deep sympathy and condolences to the families of those soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq yesterday and also to express our pride and gratitude to the Black Watch for the extraordinary and heroic job they are doing there, which is of crucial importance to making sure democratic elections go ahead in Iraq, which of itself is the single most important element of bringing stability to Iraq and therefore stability to the wider Middle East

In Fife, Private Lowe's brother had strong words to express how he felt about the war and in particular, President Bush:

β€œHe just thought he was an arsehole for starting the war over nothing, trying to get the money and oil. That's what we thought ourselves, that's what Paul thought as well, We all thought that.”

Craig Lowe, brother of Private Paul Lowe

Their bodies will be flown south to Basra before being sent home to their families.
