Le Pen meets resistance
Politics

Published: 25-Apr-2004

The BNP is not normally known for its ability to reach out beyond borders.

But today it extended a hand of friendship across the channel to France's far right leader Jean Marie Le Pen.

The British National Party invited the French National Front boss to address a black-tie event in Shropshire, billed as "the patriotic dinner event of the year".

The location of the dinner is top-secret, but earlier, anti-racism campaigners did manage to track down the men as they left a press conference in Manchester. Lucy Manning reports.

"Nazi scum," they shouted - sending Jean Marie Le Pen on his way after his controversial visit to Manchester with the BNP.

As eggs and rubbish rained down on his car the police had to step in to stop anti-racism campaigners getting to him.

Inside, the men of the far right - the BNP leader and France's Front National leader tried to present an air of respectability

The BNP members desperately hope some of Le Pen's electoral success will rub off on them.

They can boast only a few councillors - but are making a big push at the local and European elections in June. Hoping that their localised support could give them a Euro MP.

Le Pen has showed just what far right parties can achieve.

He sent electoral shockwaves across Europe when he took more than sixteen per cent of the vote in the first round of the 2002 Presidential elections. A million took to the streets of France to protest.
