Virgin Soldiers
Dispatches - The War We Never Saw

Published: 02-Jun-2003
By: Dispatches

Channel 4 continues its "The War We Never Saw" series with this documentary which follows an untested US unit as it fought its way into Iraq.

With unprecedented access, award-winning filmmaker Dodge Billingsley tells the story of India Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, crack US frontline troops in Iraq.

With some as young as 19, the invasion of Iraq was the first time any of them had actually been sent into combat.

Having joined up with the regiment two months before they went into battle and watched them train and prepare for war, Dodge was able to experience first-hand the fears, hopes, black humour and occasionally humdrum day-to-day life of these young men as they played a vital role in the liberation of Iraq.

With remarkable footage of battles with the Iraqi 32nd Mechanised Brigade and the destruction of the infamous Salman Pak military complex and various Republican Guard bases, Virgin Soldiers reveals the true story of the men who fought their way into the heart of Baghdad.

Four weeks after leaving Kuwait their objective had been achieved. Iraq was liberated. Phase two had begun: stabilising operations

Dispatches: Virgin Soldiers broadcasts on Channel 4 at 9pm, June 2 and repeats again June 3 at 2,45 am.
