Heroes welcome
Rugby

Published: 25-Nov-2003

Nearly eight thousand euphoric rugby fans turned up at Heathrow in the early hours of this morning to welcome home the victorious England team.

The star of Saturday's final, Jonny Wilkinson, said he was 'over-awed' by the reception.

Terminal four was jam-packed by 4am, and there was chaos on approach roads as fans abandoned cars and dashed to catch a glimpse of their returning heroes.

Just before 5 this morning - the victorious England team emerged from a plane renamed Sweet Chariot in their honour - and brought the Webb Ellis Cup and their exhausted bodies into a reception they simply hadn't expected.

Thousands of fans turned up before dawn - all in good voice - to welcome the rarest of sporting heroes - men who'd finally beaten Australia at something - restoring English faith in winning - and giving the nation a lift at the same time.

And the man of the moment - his name of everybody's lips - bemused and wary - his life will surely never be the same again.

For the whole team though - a moment to savour - as they headed through the darkness and the throngs of fans - not going home yet though - first a press conference in a Surrey hotel.

Jonny Wilkinson clearly stating his desire not to become rugby's answer to David Beckham.

The scrum of cameras pointing right at him told a different story. The team though isn't getting carried away with their newfound fame.

Some of the team obviously hadn't appreciated they'd left the Australian sunshine behind - or perhaps they were too busy living it up on the plane home to get changed.

The euphoria should last longer than their time off - many of these players have to report for work tomorrow at their clubs.
