Second Tube derailment
Transport

Published: 19-Oct-2003
By: Jane Dodge

It's the second derailment on the tube within two days - and the third this year.

Tube bosses are now facing growing questions about safety.

It happened as the tube train pulled into Camden Town Station in North London at around ten past ten this morning.

Out of the darkness came the injured. A man with a broken leg was rushed to a nearby ambulance. Another man sat dazed and disoriented.

The biggest surprise of this latest derailment? That so many of the 200 passengers involved emerged unscathed.

Some of those injured were treated at the scene. Up to seven others were taken to hospital.

The north bound train from Kings Cross had just begun to slow down as it approached Camden Town Tube Station. Three carriages had reached platform three when the derailment happened. The other three were still in a tunnel.

It seems the end of the fifth carriage derailed pulling the whole of the sixth carriage off the track.

That carriage then hit the wall of the tunnel - shattering the windows. All those who were injured were in that sixth carriage.

A train immediately behind the one that was derailed was forced to stop. Passengers including several tourists on board also had to be led to safety.

An investigation is now underway into the cause of today's derailment. It's thought it'll concentrate on possible faults with the track rather than the train.

Britain's biggest rail union has told C4 News that drivers had expressed specific concerns about a set of points that control the direction of trains at Camden. But nothing was done.

This is the second tube derailment in 48 hours and the third this year. London Underground say Friday night's incident at Hammersmith is believed to have been due to a crack in the rail. A derailment in January at Chancery Lane was caused by a faulty gearbox in a train.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE?

The responsibility for the maintenance of London Underground's tracks lies with two private companies.

Tube Lines, who maintain the track where today's derailment took place.

And Metronet, who are in charge of the piece of track where Friday's incident occurred.

Each of these two consortiums, divide up into a total of eight different private companies, painting a confusing picture of who holds the ultimate responsibility for the safety of the tube.

Now the rail unions are threatening strike action unless those private maintenance contracts are suspended. But London Underground disputes any link between privatisation and these recent derailments.

But the Mayor of London Ken Livingstone remains unconvinced.

Mayor Ken Livingstone:

"We cannot reach firm conclusions until facts are known but one obvious question will be whether, as we feared, the Private Public Partnership has increased the risk of incidents of this type. Londoners and visitors to the city must be able to be sure they are safe on the Tube."
