Italy under-powered
Technology

Published: 28-Sep-2003
By: Peter Morgan

More than 12 hours after it started, the cause of Italy's worst power blackout in almost a decade is still not known.

Power has now been restored in most parts, although there are still some problems in the southern regions.

The catastrophic power failure follows similar blackouts in Denmark and Sweden.

The third major European blackout in a month. This time more than 50 million Italians lost power, trapping rail passengers and thousands of people in Rome - who had been enjoying an all night street party.

Italy imports a fifth of its electricity from its neighbours. And today, as power was gradually restored - they were all blaming each other for last night's massive power failure.

Engineers think the catastrophic power cut was caused by four line failures in Switzerland early this morning - triggered initially by a tree falling onto a power line.

That was followed by another line failure in Austria - and heavy storms in the Alps interrupting supplies on two key power lines from France.
