Car bombs kill at least 46 in Mumbai
India

Published: 25-Aug-2003

Two car bombs have killed at least 46 people in the heart of Mumbai - India's entertainment and financial capital.

Both bombs were hidden in taxi and are the latest in a spate of attacks on the city.

This mornings first bomb exploded at Zaveri Bazaar, the gold bullion trading centre which is also near the site of a large Hindu temple.

The second explosion was near the city's main tourist attraction, the Gateway of India. Neighbouring Pakistan has condemned the explosions as an act of terrorism.

The bombs exploded in the middle of the morning. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, though the bombings come on the eve of a big Hindu festival in the State.

And the Indian government says, while it isn’t clear who is behind today’s bombs, other recent attacks have been the work of an outlawed Muslim student group working with Pakistan based militants fighting Indian rule in Kashmir.

Those recent bombings include a bus bomb that killed three in December - a bomb on a train in March that killed 12 and another bus attack in July that left two people dead.

The wounded from today’s attack overwhelmed Mumbai’s hospitals.

The bombings were quickly condemned by Pakistan. Relations between the nuclear armed neighbours - which have been improving - could be set back by today’s blasts.

The explosions come on the same day as a long-anticipated archeological report on a religious site in northern India claimed by both Hindus and Muslims.

It was the worst attack in Mumbai since 1993, when bombs killed 260 people. That was seen as retaliation by Islamic militants for Muslim deaths at the hands of rioting Hindus.

India police had feared a similar reaction following riots in Gujarat last year, in which 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, died.

India's commerical capital is tense tonight, the police on high alert - for more bombs, but also to prevent violence between the City's religious communities.
